Advice For Student Teachers

Student teaching can be stressful, overwhelming, and terrifying. Check out this advice for student teachers!

  • Remember that student teaching is going to be different than running your own classroom.
  • Get to know your students. Memorize their names. Take note of different learning styles. This is a very important practice.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions. You want to be working with a teacher that wants to mentor you, so foster that relationship.
  • Get to know other teachers and other student teachers. This isn’t just about networking; it’s about learning and also having others you can talk with.
  • Pay close attention at all times. You may not agree with everything the teacher you are observing does, and that’s ok. It isn’t your classroom. Keep notes, and keep track of what works and what doesn’t.
  • Make sure you dress professionally. This is especially important when working in a high school. You don’t want to look like a student; you want to look like a teacher.
  • Take a close look at your social media. Make everything private that you can. Remove content that may be controversial.
  • Don’t be discouraged. This goes for everything. Some students just won’t listen, and some teachers will be impatient that they have to work with you. That’s just the way it goes. Accept it, and don’t dwell on it.
  • You’ll probably cry at some point, and that’s ok. No really, it is! It doesn’t mean you aren’t a good teacher. Actually, it probably shows that you care enough to be a teacher.
  • Figure out the unspoken rules of your school and follow them. The staff works here all the time, you’re just a visitor. Respect the space.
  • Don’t resent doing a lot of busywork such as making copies, organizing files, and printing materials. Your teacher is likely overworked and this will help them out a lot.
  • Don’t give up. You can do this!
